Choosing the right contractor to remodel your home gives you confidence that your project will be completed to your specifications and schedule. Hiring a remodeler is almost like hiring an employee! You want the best candidate for the job. You may need to interview a few different home remodeling companies in VA before you make your decision to feel secure in letting the company make changes to your home. Here are five steps to take in order to find remodeling services that are the right fit for your home, your budget, and your vision.

Get Recommendations

You can start by asking friends and family for recommendations but don’t stop there. Talk to other people in your community who know contractors, such as the local hardware store or the building inspector. Assemble a list. Check out their websites and online reviews. Reduce your list to a few top contenders for the remodeling services you need.

Make Phone Calls

Narrow your list even further by making some initial phone calls to learn more about the company’s availability and reliability. You’ll want to start by asking:

  • Do they take the type and size of projects your remodeling will be?
  • How long will it take to get on the calendar?
  • Are they willing to provide licensing and insurance information and previous customer references?
  • Do they use employees or subcontractors?

You’ll get more specific once you meet with the contractor and get an estimate. Here, you’re just trying to find out if the contractor is a good fit for your project and that they can take on the job. A contractor who can answer your questions well and puts you at ease is a good sign.

Dig Deeper

Browse through online portfolios. Read reviews. Check with the local BBB for accolades and complaints. Verify their contractor’s license is active. Check with past customers. Good contractors make it easy for you find out more about their projects and services. Learn more about the company and team you will be working with.

Get an Estimate

Once you’ve narrowed your list to two or three contractors that you feel comfortable with, get an estimate. Here’s where you can ask more questions about payments, scope of the project, how it will be managed, etc. Good contractors are transparent and will answer your questions with confidence. Ask your contractor to provide a clear estimate that details the scope of work and what is or is not included in their estimate. When you start to compare bids, don’t just look at the lowest price. Take into consideration other factors such as details about what work is included and how it will be performed, the quality of the materials included, overall value, timeline, level of communication and responsiveness, and more.

Read the Contract

Don’t sign anything without reading the contract. Every detail of the project should be mentioned, from the payment schedule, start and completion dates, and specific materials to be used. Asking for clear terms in the contract isn’t about distrusting the contractor. It’s about making sure there are no misunderstandings, and the remodeling project will be successful.
